In an act of protest of President-Elect Donald Trump's proposed muslim registry Candace Thompson created a little art project "The National White Male Registry". In this powerful piece Thompson uncovers the true hypocrisy of the proposed muslim registry with researched crimes stats of white males. Thompson states, "As you may or may not know, in America 57% of reported rapes 1 and 64% of mass shootings 2 were committed by white men. 45% of all serial killers are white men 3. 1 in 3 women will experience some form of domestic violence during their lifetime 4, and 97% of those domestic violence perpetrators were men 5."
The registry presents questions that are a litmus test revealing prejudices and racism, "In the past year have you made a derogatory comment about marginalized groups to another white male". The questions plunge into the arena of gender, ethnicity, nationality and sexual orientation. Sorry gay white men but you aren't exempt. The registry goes on to ask, "Sexual Orientation: Are you a LGBTQ, occasionally afforded benefits of white male privilege". In an extreme case this brings to mind gay white men who align themselves with hate groups posing as creditable journalistic entities. These individuals have tweeted hateful and truly bizarre comments on social media, and have tried to gain fame and notoriety for their grotesque language. We can not allow that!
In a more mundane sense we see these prejudices in the way some interact, treat and talk about gay men of color. Being from a marginalized group doesn't stop people from spewing hateful and alarming rhetoric, and from simply being racist. These displays have also been seen on social media apps like Grindr or Scruff. There is a Tumblr dedicated to exposing racism on Grindr, Racist Grindr. Thompson goes on to explain what marginalized groups mean, " marginalized groups and individuals include Women, People of Color, Immigrants (naturalized or not), Members of the LGBTQ community, Persons with Disabilities (physical or otherwise), the Working Class, People living in poverty, etc..."
Thompson has already personally registered a number of prominent leaders for their long records of racist rhetoric. Now, I urge you to take a like at the registry and personally ask yourselves these questions and see where you stand. Everyone including people of color can benefit from a little introspection from time to time.
