Dean McCarthy is an Australian Host who hangs out with celebrities, runs a fashion line; who happens to be incredibly attractive with the sickest body. He most have done something right in a past life. He lives the kind of life most of us only see in movies. The fact of the matter McCarthy's life has nothing to do with luck, nepotism or good fortune. He's a tireless multitasking perfectionist who never gives up. We at Fop used this opportunity to find out where in the hell he gets all of this drive. Plus this interview is a guise to chat with one of the hottest men in Hollywood Reporting. Can you blame us?
How did you get into being a host?
My fascination with Hollywood started at a young age, because I was sure that I wanted to be an actor. Small problem though, I can’t actually act (laughs).
When I was 14-years-old, I had my own radio show on the local station where I grew up. I then worked on various programs around Australia before moving to the USA. I am now the Hollywood Correspondent for Scoopla and I interview celebrities for The Today Show (Australia) and a network in the Middle East.
What is Scoopla? Many Americans may not know.
Scoopla is a nationally syndicated entertainment news program, covering all things Hollywood and celebrity. It airs on the Hit Network all over Australia.
Do you ever get a list of questions that are off limits from celebs before the interview? If so what are some of them?
Often publicists will tell me to “only talk about the film,” which is a nice way of saying, “don’t get personal.” I was once interviewing a huge star and I was told that any mention of his recent ‘divorce’ and the interview would be shut down immediately. I completely understand that – they are just human after all.
Who are some of the most noteworthy celebrities you've interviewed and who has been your favorite?
I have had some great interviews. Melissa McCarthy is the funniest star I’ve ever interviewed, she had me laughing so hard that I couldn’t even speak. Will Smith once jumped in the middle of my interview with another star and randomly started singing – that was pretty memorable. Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) looks like such a big tough guy but he is the nicest, most down-to-earth person you’ll ever meet. I think my favorite interview ever though was with Anna Kendrick. She spent the entire interview jokingly quizzing me about what our first date would look like. She is a blast.
What has been the most awkward on-camera moment?
There’s honestly been plenty! I told Kellan Lutz how much I loved his Australian girlfriend, how stunning she was, how perfect they are together, and then cringed when he said “Yeah we just broke up.” I once said how exciting it was to be catching up with Chris Hemsworth and he replied, “I’m sure it would be, except I’m Liam.”
You’re a very handsome guy. We are sure you get tons of attention. Has there ever been any chemistry with one of your interviewees?
(laughs) Well, thank you! A pretty big star once asked me “What are you doing later?” then followed with a little wink - all on camera. My producer Andy awkwardly laughed and my poor little face went bright red.
It looks like you are breaking into the world of fashion with a line called Argyle Grant. Can you tell us more about the line and your role with it?
One of my best friends Ryan Morgan founded Argyle Grant when he realized that something was really missing in the market place - a chic, sophisticated and sexy mens’ swim brand. Argyle Grant has since evolved into a full lifestyle brand. Being made in Los Angeles and from all Italian fabric - the quality is absolute perfection.
Argyle Grant had its first runway show. What was that like?
Our Miami runway show was one of the most nerve-racking moments of my year so far. Ryan and I had never organized a runway show, let alone presented the range to a room full of press, photographers, celebrities, stylists, editors – it was surreal. We have expanded the range even further and are revealing all at LA Fashion week in October, then presenting in Belgrade in November.
We noticed that the line was featured in Vogue Italia. How did that come about?
Vogue Italia featured their favorite looks from Miami Swim Week and they took notice of our eye-catching new Palm Springs print. It was such a thrill to be featured.
Where can we find this line?
Our first Flagship store is opening this month at The River, Rancho Mirage – near Palm Springs. We are also stocked in W Hotels, Ritz Carlton hotels, Universal Body (Sunset Blvd) and online at argylegrant.com
You are an amazingly fit guy and we've even seen you model for the line. How do you stay in such great shape?
I absolutely love health and fitness; it’s a huge part of my life. I eat clean, train hard, I grunt, I groan – all of it. I prefer weight training to classes or group work – but that’s a personal thing.
How do you find time juggling so many roles? Does that leave any time for your dating?
I think it doesn’t matter how busy you are, if you like someone you’ll make the time to date them.
You're a Host, run a fashion line and a model. Is there anything you can't do?
I don’t limit myself at all. I’m extremely ambitious and so I actually love taking on new challenges. Bring it on, I say.
After so much success what's next for you?
I want to grow Argyle Grant and keep expanding my career. I’ve also been working on a professional project in the background, and I’m excited for that to launch soon.
You were an ambassador for LA Pride and got an Emmy nomination for SF Pride, tell us about that?
It was such an honor to be involved with LA Pride this year as the correspondent and an ambassador. I was a reporter for the SF Pride Live telecast and we got nominated for an Emmy Award – we all worked so hard on that and to be recognized in that way was the most incredible feeling.
