We caught up this dynamic duo, Tia Morris and Jason Dottley the creators and stars of the hilarious web-series, Body Hair. Not willing to wait for an opportunity Tia and Jason created their own. We chat with them about their friendship, developing the series, and what a exactly is a "Ratchet Trip." We learn that they are both real life stoners with true grit and perseverance.
After creating a successful recording career, being a 5-time top 40 Billboard Recording Artist and star of "Sordid Lives: The Series" what made you want to do a web-series? JASON: I am just ready to be back on television again, it’s been 9 years and it feels like forever. I’ve always believed in waiting for no one. So I didn’t, and this is the best first step I thought I could make.
Tia is this your first time Acting/Directing? Can you tell us more about your career path? TIA: This is my first time directing! I was acting in local theater and was in an indie horror film in Louisiana before I moved to New York. My confidence was a bit low so I didn't audition very much so I began backup singing. Being on tour with Jason really was what really started our working/creative partnership.
Jason we are used to seeing you in a more glamours light. Was developing this character of Justin difficult for you? JASON: It was amazing! It was so nice not to have to worry about being sexy or “the cool guy.”
How did the two of you meet? Were you friends before? TiA: We met on the middle of the dance floor at Webster Hall!
JASON: Appropriately, the greatest nightclub in all of New York City.
Who came up with the idea of Body Hair? Were you both stone? TIA: I'm always stoned! We both came up with it. It was a collaboration. We were at the gym a lot and it was comical and we wrote about it. As you can see we are not gym people.
JASON: Everything she said! HA!
In one of the episodes you two have a "Ratchet Trip." What in the hell is that? TIA: To me a ratchet trip is where you turn up in the wrong place/wrong time.
JASON: Exactly, and if you’ve ever taken a pre-work out “supplement”, those things are like one degree from crack. We got some bad stuff.
Where did the two of you find the actress Michele Azzati who plays Delores? She's a trip! TIA: From the gym! She is such an awesome lady with so much life and spirit. The day after we wrapped her scenes she was off on a trip to go white water rafting.
JASON: And on top of that, she can do anything you can do in the gym 4 times better. She’s actually very sweet, but she was based on the “gym bitch” we can all relate to having to deal with.
Tia how did you come up with the character Dede? She's so dynamic, goofy and yet lovable. TIA: Dede is based on someone I know, so it was effortless.
Are you two anything like your characters? TIA: I'm pretty lazy like Dede. I also love wigs and like to switch up my look a lot.
JASON: I don’t think I’m anything like Justin. On surface, sure, I moved home, took care of my grandmother with my mom until she passed of lung cancer, and I’m now still living with my move while we wrap up some family business and I move back to NYC in January. So there’s that and that I smoke a lot of weed. But that’s it. OH! And I have found myself very attracted to several trans men (and women), so that’s three things that are similar.
What were some of the challenges of creating Body Hair? TIA: Scheduling. We didn't have a lot of time to shoot and our locations were only available to us late night. And maybe casting for me. I don't live in Florida so I wasn't familiar with any of the talent, so I just had to really trust Jason.
JASON: Honestly, it was one of the most complicated projects I’ve ever done, yet it was one of the easiest. Sometimes when it’s right, it just flows.
What was some of your favorite parts of developing the series? TIA: Writing and shooting were the best. I loved playing Dede. I moved to New York to act and I haven't really done it here, so it was great to be able to do what I love. I'm a happier person.
JASON: I fell in love with directing. Perhaps more than acting. That was a personal “development."
What's next with the series? Will there be a second season? TIA: I hope we can do a second season. I have a ideas! I'm also working on a proper pilot script for Body Hair.
JASON: To sell it and do it in 30 minute episodes, then to create more TV with Tia. Besides being one of the most fun friends I’ve ever had, her mind is wicked and I love that.
Jason will there be another Album anytime soon? JASON: No darling, I have retired from commercial music entirely. It’s all about acting and directing.
Tia where can we see you next. We want to see more of your dynamic talent. TIA: I don't know where you will see me next. I'm working on a couple of projects behind the scenes and writing a lot. I'm hoping someone will see our show and just have to have me for theirs soooo fingers crossed. I have big plans but I do want to keep working with Jason because it was the best experience even and we made magic happen.
JASON: And we vacation like pro’s together.
Finally, is there anything else you want to share with us?
JASON: Madonna and Beyonce. Must work with both. ARE YOU LISTENING???
